Screen Capture Options

October 5, 2010

Quick post to share some tools I use for screen capture. I love web development. So many great options to present your data e.g. SVG. However it takes us time to produce compelling reports compatible with the matrix of word processing and presentation software. As you noticed, our web UI sometimes advances faster than our reporting. If you have an immediate need to capture a visual e.g. a zoomed in Risk Map, a good work around is a screen capture. Here’s a few free options I use. Let us know what you think or your recommendations.

1. Windows Snipping tool: my favorite option for windows. Note the Tablet PC feature pack is required for XP and Vista.

2. ScreenHunter 5.1: native windows app, can be downloaded from cnet.

Word of caution: while I performed cursory background checks on the non-native windows tools, I can’t personally vouch for their safety or resiliency. My preferences are:

1. native OS tools

2. commercial products

3. free products with an extensive history, a developer with a (legitimate) business model, and positive reviews.

Let me know if you’d like recommendations for mac or linux.
